The 2025 Tournament
Champions: Solace Solitude
The Story of the Day
Just like in 2024, this year's tournament followed a league format, guaranteeing every team at least one game. From the opening whistle, the standard was exactly what we've come to expect, with fast-paced football, plenty of quality and no shortage of drama.
A Town FC, captained by Clinton Imade, got the tournament underway in style by scoring the opening goal of the day. Newcomers Good Mix, led by Aaron David, showed plenty of promise in flashes, but experienced sides Ballinrobe FC and Hot Shots FC proved too strong in the early rounds.
The return of Clowown Rovers also caught the eye. Featuring several current and former League of Ireland Under-20 players from Athlone and Shamrock Rovers, they quickly reminded everyone why they had been among the favourites in previous years.
One of the standout matches of the group stage came between Ballinrobe FC and eventual finalists Solace Solitude. Led by Player of the Tournament Agbo Babatunde, Solace Solitude edged a fiery contest that set the tone for the rest of the day.
There was drama throughout the league stage. A dramatic last-minute equaliser from goalkeeper Joshua Osho rescued A Town FC when elimination looked certain, sending them through to the semi-finals. Longford Warriors also impressed on their tournament debut, battling hard in every match, but the experience of Ballinrobe FC and Longford, led by Tyler and Darren Lawrence respectively, ultimately proved decisive.
The semi-finals produced two fascinating contests. A Town FC met Solace Solitude in what many saw as an in-house derby, with several former Baido FC players lining up on opposite sides. On the neighbouring pitch, former champions Clowown Rovers faced first-time semi-finalists Ballinrobe FC.
Solace Solitude controlled much of their semi-final, with Agbo Babatunde giving them the lead through a superb strike. At the same time, Clowown Rovers edged a tightly contested encounter with a late winner to book their place in another final.
The final delivered the showdown many had been waiting for. Solace Solitude's Ribeiro Junior lined up against familiar faces from his former side, Clowown Rovers, including Patrick Hussey, adding another chapter to a rivalry that has produced some memorable contests over the years.
Solace Solitude made the perfect start, with early goals from Emmanuel, Ribeiro Junior and Agbo Babatunde putting them firmly in control. Clowown Rovers fought back through the tournament's unsung hero, Keelin Mulligan, but the comeback came too late as Solace Solitude were crowned Athlone's Finest 6-a-Side champions for 2025.
Will Solace Solitude defend their title, or will another team write the next chapter in Athlone's Finest history?
